No matter where you work, there’s an art to dealing with co-workers on a daily basis. The Gabber. This is usually a friendly sort who just won’t stop talking – to the point where you might have trouble concentrating on the job. To avoid a conflict – simply tell this person that, while you love chatting, you simply don’t have time. Make a date for lunch and let him or her talk up a storm when you are out of the office.
The Squeaky Wheel. A natural born whiner who thinks the grass is always greener on the other side, this person is just looking for an outlet for his or her complaints. Don’t be that person, and do your best to diffuse their argument. For example, if he says “I can’t stand the new receptionist,” you say, “Oh really, I thought she seemed really nice.” Once he or she realizes she doesn’t have a willing co-complainer, they will most likely leave you alone the next time.
The Office Gossip. Anyone who has lived on the earth for any length of time knows that engaging in gossip has its appeal – but can be very dangerous. Keep in mind, however, that office gossip may not only cause pain to a co-worker, but can reflect negatively on your career if your are caught in the gossip mill. Do your best to stay out of the gossip, and you’ll find that your job is safe and your co-workers will trust you more.
